A former police officer has been jailed for two years after sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl.
Michael Defries, who worked for the British Transport Police, admitted two historical charges of sexual assault at Lewes Crown Court last month.
He abused the schoolgirl in 2008, leaving her feeling ‘disgusted and violated’.
Now, the 58-year-old has also been made the subject of a Sexual Offences Prevention Order for 12 years.
He had also been involved in the running of a swimming club for children and adults, the court heard.
He was dismissed from his job earlier this month after pleading guilty to two counts of sexual assault on a child under the age of 13.
A statement from his victim – who cannot be named for legal reasons – said she felt ‘disgusted and violated’ by the abuse, but that now she felt ‘safe again’, according to the Chichester Observer.
Sentencing Defries yesterday, judge Michael Lawson QC, said his punishment should reflect the ‘public disgust’ at his actions.
